What Virus Causes Warts?

Warts are harmless tumors of the skin that are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Its family has approximately 100 strains or types of human papilloma viruses. Anogenital warts are triggered by Types 6, 40, 16, 18, 30, 39, 33, 34, 35, 31, and 11 amongst others. A vaccine has been formulated to prevent infections from the types 6, 11, 16 and 18—termed as Gardasil. It also aids in the deterrence of infecting others with other types of anogenital warts by cross-protecting the individuals from the other types of HPVs.

The human papilloma virus (HPV) strain has been connected with more severe diseases such as lung and tracheal cancers, oral and laryngeal cancers but this should not be a concern when considering what virus causes warts as warts are generally harmless, if not unsightly.
